The Community Music School-Detroit (CMS-D) is seeking a Program Manager to be responsible for program planning and day-to-day operations of music education activities at the MSU Community Music School-Detroit. Must have experience and passion for music education, community outreach, and administrative work and customer/constituent relations. Work hours include some evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities include:


  • Provides input on programming, outreach and operations
  • Seeks out and manages volunteers
  • Manages student recitals (by program area)
  • If applicable: teaches classes or serves as a substitute for other faculty
  • Coordinates guest speakers for enrichment activities
  • Follows up on absent students
  • Set up and tear down for events (seating, equipment needs including pianos and drum sets, amps, etc.)
  • Tracks condition & movement of equipment
  • Supports instrument loan library and supplies inventory; checks out loaner instruments
  • Manages a portfolio of programs, classes, events, faculty and facility needs
  • Manages curriculum implementation for programs assigned;
  • Liaison with facilities staff


  • Processes financial aid
  • Creates reports from SSP (financial, student attendance, statistical)
  • Manages accounts receivables (invoicing, payment plans, collections)
  • Manages online tuition sales using Cashnet


  • Registers students, processes necessary paperwork and payments, updates registration materials
  • Helps maintains student and project files
  • Helps monitor and orders supplies
  • Helps maintains policies and handbooks
  • Manages end-of-semester student and parent surveys (by program area)


  • Helps ensure accuracy of website and compliance with MSU standards
  • Maintaining program information on website, as assigned
  • Creates email and social media communications for programs assigned
  • Implements marketing plans, recruits students
  • Develops community relationships and represents CMS-D (school visits, presentations, meetings, partnerships, marketing, etc.)
Preferred Skills:
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • One to three years’ experience in music education
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
    • Commitment to student and community musical success
    • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to multi-task and contribute to leadership ideas in support of the overall vision and mission of the school
    • Extensive musical knowledge and experience
    • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing software
