A Framework for Supporting Creatives

How CultureSource supports a vibrant cultural ecosystem in Southeast Michigan

Creative work succeeds or struggles based on the systems around it — social networks, fair marketplaces, resources, communication channels, strong intermediaries, and policy. CultureSource, in partnership with WolfBrown, developed a framework to guide where we invest, convene, and advocate so more creatives across Southeast Michigan can build sustainable, thriving practices.

WHAT WE ARE SEEING

Support exists, but it is fragmented.
Southeast Michigan has hundreds of organizations serving creatives — most focused on specific disciplines, communities, or geographies, making the landscape difficult to navigate.

Access is uneven.
Creatives experience very different levels of support depending on their networks, background, and field. Some find pathways forward; others encounter barriers at every turn.

Marketplaces are a pressure point.
Many creatives struggle to reach local audiences, buyers, or commissioners — limiting income and long-term viability.

Short-term support can’t carry the full load.
Grants and one-off programs matter, but they don’t address the structural conditions shaping creative livelihoods.

THE SEVEN PILLARS

These seven interconnected areas shape whether creatives can sustain their work. When one is weak, others feel the strain.

1

Expertise and Know-How
Skills, guidance, and practical knowledge

2

Strong Networks
Relationships, peer community, and collaboration

3

Robust Marketplaces
Pathways to audiences, buyers, and income

4

Space, Tools & Resources
Physical, financial, and material conditions

5

Communications Channels
Visibility, information flow, and opportunity

6

Intermediaries
Organizations connecting creatives to resources

7

Policy & Cross-Sector Links
Policies and partnerships that shape long-term conditions
WHY ECOSYSTEM THINKING MATTERS

Supporting creatives is not the responsibility of any single organization. It requires coordination across creatives, nonprofits, funders, educators, policymakers, and businesses. When these parts work in alignment, the ecosystem becomes more navigable, more equitable, and more resilient.

IN PRACTICE AT CULTURESOURCE

Creatives as Agents of Change is a cohort program in development. Through in-person sessions, asynchronous learning, and individual coaching, it will support artists in growing their creative intelligence beyond their primary practice, opening doors to more diverse and sustainable careers.

With thanks to Alan Brown and John Carnwath at WolfBrown for their foundational research on the framework.
